“You must stop busing migrants to Chicago and New York City.”

Last week I discussed the outpouring of humanitarian kindness by Colorado’s Gov Polis in shipping unwanted migrants to New York City. Don’t mistake this for the ‘bad’ kind of busing that DeSantis and Abbot do. No, in Polis’ words, it’s “honoring our values by treating people with dignity and respect.”

I’m not so sure that shipping people to NYC or Chiraq treats them with dignity and respect. NYC and Chicago certainly don’t.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot demanded Saturday that Colorado Gov. Jared Polis stop busing asylum seekers to their cities, saying they are “over capacity.”

“We respectfully demand that you cease and desist sending migrants to New York City and Chicago,” Adams and Lightfoot wrote in a letter to Polis. “Since December of 2022, Chicago and New York City have received hundreds of individuals from Colorado.”

“You must stop busing migrants to Chicago and New York City,” the mayors wrote. “In the case of family reunification, let us work together to ensure that people are reconnected with their loved ones, however sending migrants to our cities whose systems are over capacity, where they may struggle to find shelter and other services is wrong and further victimizes these most vulnerable individuals.”

Polis previously insisted, “too many people, in our opinion, view this through a political lens or as playing politics — and it’s terrible that in some places, people have been used as political props. But what we are doing here is just honoring our values by treating people with dignity and respect.”

Adams and Lightfoot should honor their values by putting the migrants on buses to Denver. Or trains or planes. The whole thing can become a paradox in which the migrants are being perpetually shipping around the country without ever stopping.

Or, and this is racist madness, we can build a border wall, enforce border security, pull out of the international refugee treaty that demands we give open the door to migrants, and then ship all the arrivals back where they came from. By bus. Even if it’s across the ocean.

But that would be madness. This way is so much better. Once all the migrants are bused to Chicago and NYC, we can build a border wall around them.

Now that 2022 has come to a close, it’s worth looking back at how the issue of immigration affected America this year, and what lies ahead.

The past year set records at the border for all the wrong reasons. While the 2022 official numbers have not been released, it appears a record number of illegal aliens crossed the U.S. border. During the last fiscal year (October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2022) Border Patrol apprehended more than 2.7 million aliens crossing the U.S. border illegally and a record 98 suspected terrorists (another record).

As recently as 2019, border patrol apprehended zero suspected terrorists illegally crossing the border. Additionally, government sources confirm at least 853 migrants perished while attempting to make the perilous journey through Central America to the U.S., setting another tragic milestone. These staggering numbers make clear that 2022 was the worst year for border security in American history. Could 2023 be any better? It’s unlikely.

During the 2022 midterm election, Joe Biden’s party significantly outperformed historical trends, and the White House has made clear that it sees the midterm results as permission to ram through their anti-border agenda. After the election, Biden said he wasn’t planning on changing anything, making it clear that he misread the results as an affirmation of his agenda.

“I’m confident these policies are working and that we’re on the right path and we need to stick with them,” he said

Since then, the Biden administration has tried to end Title 42 — the only semblance of sanity this administration has maintained at the border since taking office. Thankfully, the American people received a momentary reprieve when Chief Justice John Roberts issued a temporary stay, blocking the administration from ending the program. However, the policy remains in great danger, and when and if it does fall, the subsequent crisis might make the last two years look like child’s play.

Administration officials are expecting as many as 14,000 illegal aliens to enter the country every day once Title 42 ends. This would create an economic and cultural upheaval the likes of which most Americans have not experienced ever, while gravely endangering U.S. national security.

It is essential that this program remain in place, but unfortunately Congress appears asleep at the wheel. Congress passed a $1.7 trillion omnibus bill with little meaningful support for border security. Bipartisan congressional apathy towards the border crisis is a betrayal of the American people. However, all hope is not lost.

As the year came to a close, some members of Congress attempted to rush through an amnesty for millions of illegal aliens. Border security advocates were able to defeat an amnesty proposal from Sens. Thom Tillis and Kyrsten Sinema and the legislation was not attached to the omnibus bill like many had feared. Additionally, legislation intended to expand the number of green cards and reform the U.S. immigration system in a more pro-migration direction was unable to get out of the House of Representatives. The death of those two bills was a major victory for all Americans who care about our sovereignty and the rule of law.

As a result of the 2022 midterms, Republicans will take over the house this month, meaning the Biden Administration will face increased oversight over its failures at the border. Representative Kevin McCarthy, the expected next House Speaker, has called on Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to resign, and has threatened to impeach him if he does not. While Mayorkas would almost certainly be acquitted in a Senate trial, his impeachment would present an excellent opportunity to educate the American people on the disastrous effects of the border crisis. He would be forced to defend these disastrous border numbers publicly, creating enough political pressure on the Biden Administration to begin taking the crisis seriously.

States lead the way in fighting back against the federal government’s anti-border policies in 2022. Govs. Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis of Texas and Florida, respectively, have forced liberal elites to confront the crisis they created by bussing illegal aliens to sanctuary cities across the country, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Abbott also recently declared an invasion at the border, which will allow the state of Texas to take additional steps to protect their residents from the crisis. With the federal government likely to continue its anti-borders aggression, the states will once again lead the way in combating the crisis in 2023.

What has happened at the border over the past two years is one of the great tragedies in American history, and those of us who care about the rule of law and the future of our country are in for the fight of our lives in the New Year.

Washington, D.C. — The following statement was issued by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) in response to the election of Kevin McCarthy of California as the 53rd Speaker of the House:

“Over the past two years, we have all witnessed the devastating harm wrought by a rogue administration that is asserting near dictatorial powers in a relentless effort to keep our borders open. The American people are appalled by what is going on and want to see it ended.

“Now that the 118th Congress is officially underway with a new House majority, it is in large part because voters rejected the Biden administration’s purposeful dismantling of our nation’s borders, as well as former Speaker Pelosi’s amnesty-first legislative agenda. Newly elected Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the entire Republican conference have a mandate to act decisively to restore control of our borders. After several days performing a bit of democracy for the whole country to see, it is time to get to work – the American people are waiting.

“Last year, a coalition of prominent organizations, including FAIR, The Heritage Foundation, NumbersUSA, and America First Policy Institute urged Congressional Republicans to quickly introduce and consider flagship legislation in the new session of Congress. Together, we stressed the critical importance of addressing core problems in our system that have fueled the historic wave of illegal immigration and enabled the Biden administration to maintain and expand its open-borders policies. Key reforms, we argued, must include closing asylum loopholes, amending the TVPRA with respect to the removal of unaccompanied alien children; terminating the Flores settlement agreement that limits the detention of children and family units; mandating appropriate resources for the border wall system and detention beds; and ending the abuse of parole authority, among other things.

“Republicans – under now Speaker McCarthy’s leadership – have promised multiple times that they will act in line with this agenda once in control of the House. Indeed, their ‘Commitment to America’ expressly included most of these reforms. The question now is whether House Republicans will be satisfied with simple border security measures, or whether they intend to offer the American people a real, overarching policy solution to a complex problem that has challenged lawmakers for generations. Speaker McCarthy, we urge you to do the latter. The entire coalition is here to help.”

On New Year’s Eve Two New York Police officers were stabbed in an apparent terrorist attack.

Their alleged assailant, 19-year-old Trevor Bickford, was identified as a recent convert to Islam. Armed with a kukri knife common to South Asian nations such as Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, Bickford reportedly wounded two officers before being shot in the shoulder by another officer on the scene.

All the available evidence seems to suggest that Bickford carried out the attack as an act of jihad.

Fox News reported that a “high-level police source” stated that Bickford was being “watched by the FBI’s counterterrorism task force in the weeks leading up to Saturday’s attack.” According to media reports Bickford also left a message to family members prior to the attack, urging them to convert to Islam.

This is the first high profile attack reported in the US in some time and the law enforcement response and actions indicate that the nation remains largely in denial about the ongoing threat of jihadist violence.

For those who closely monitor such things, this attack was not a complete surprise. Over the past month, as the Islamic State (IS) named a new emir, Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurayshi, dozens of IS affiliates around the globe released videos pledging their allegiance. In the past the Islamic State has been able to inspire and/or direct individual acts of jihad like Bickford’s attack, something that other jihadist organizations, such as Al Qaeda, have had less success accomplishing.

The report that Bickford was known to the FBI and “on their radar” as a known “extremist” is unsurprising, another example of a long-standing trend of terror suspects “watched by the FBI’s counterterrorism task force” all the way up until they conduct their attacks. A significant number of those attackers were also jihadists.

One can also not help but wonder whether the FBI is taking its eye off the ball due to command influence from the Biden administration. For more than two years now President Biden has repeated the claim that the major terrorist threat in America is from “white supremacists” or right-wing extremists. This oft-repeated claim comes despite the fact that the FBI has not a single white supremacist on its most wanted terrorist lists—lists dominated by jihadist terrorists.

Just a few weeks ago the United Nations Security Council—hardly a sentinel for the security of freedom-loving peoples—issued a report warning that the threat from “terrorism” has increased and has spread around the globe.

The report specifically mentioned the regenerating threat from Al Qaeda and the Islamic State and financing that is reaching them. The UN’s counterterrorism chief specifically mentioned the groups’ activities in Africa and Afghanistan.

U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, acknowledged that there were “8,000 terrorist incidents across 65 countries, killing more than 23,000 people” last year.

Then she said something incomprehensible. She pointed to “hateful incidents here in our country” as proof no country is safe from the threat.

The overwhelming majority of the 8,000 terrorist incidents in 65 countries that Nuland referred to were acts of jihad. And most of them occurred in Africa. The “hateful incidents” in America she mentions, without reference or attribution, are presumably violations of hate crimes statues, in no way comparable to the threat from global jihad. Nuland’s comments reflect the profound ignorance that pervades this administration as well as a growing willingness to conflate terrorism with other, less lethal, issues.

As we head into 2023 we have more than a warning from the UN to alert us to the threat from jihadist terrorism. We have a new terrorist leader who has garnered pledges of allegiance from jihadists from Nigeria to Afghanistan to the Philippines. And now we have a jihadist terrorist attack on police officers on the streets of America.

Will the Biden administration be ready?

Washington, D.C. — The 117th Congress finally wrapped up business by approving a lame-duck, pork-laden $1.7 trillion spending bill – consisting of more than 4,000 pages that not a single member had the time to read and fully analyze – funding the federal government through the remainder of the fiscal year.

Passage of the omnibus coincides with a full-blown crisis along our southern border that is about to get a whole lot worse, as the Biden administration is close to ending Title 42, the last remaining mechanism in place under which a limited number of border-crossers are being removed from the country. Yet, not only did the Democratic-led Congress reject an amendment to keep Title 42 in place, they expressly barred increased funding for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) from being used to secure the border.

“The final spending package approved by a Congress on their way out the door leaves little doubt that chaos at the border is the policy of the Democratic Party today and that their goal is to create even more of it,” charged Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). “Only a party that affirmatively wants open borders – regardless of the fiscal, security, and humanitarian costs – would let the one remaining policy that allows for the expedited removal of even some illegal migrants lapse, and deliberately tie the hands of our border enforcement agency.

“Let’s be clear, the president can restore operational control of the border simply by enforcing laws that are already on the books – many of which he voted for as a senator. Instead, he and his party continue deflect blame by claiming they inherited a broken system. The truth is they deliberately broke it themselves and are standing in the way of efforts to fix it.

“Rather than do anything to regain control of our borders, the omnibus is focused entirely on processing illegal aliens as quickly as possible and transporting them to already overwhelmed communities all across the United States. This massive spending bill effectively turns CBP into a federally administered travel agency for illegal aliens and saddles state and local governments with the costs of education, health care, housing and other basic needs for the endless flow of illegal aliens the Biden administration is waiving into the country,” concluded Stein.

Below is a summary of harmful immigration provisions included in the omnibus spending bill at the urging of Democrats, as well as proposals that were successfully defeated due in part to FAIR’s aggressively lobbying efforts.:

Harmful provisions of the omnibus:

• Provides $1.563 billion for CBP “border management” but does not allow using those funds to hire permanent border security officers, deport illegal aliens (only allows transportation to American communities), or expand border security technologies and capabilities unless it is for improving the processing of illegal aliens. This is not “border management,” it is $1.563 billion to essentially convert CBP into a federal travel agency for illegal aliens.
• Provides $800 million from CBP to FEMA to pay for “sheltering and other services” through grant programs awarded to open border aligned non-governmental organizations and charities. This broad appropriation could be viewed as enticing others to illegally enter the country and there is no prohibition against funds being distributed to organizations in the interior, meaning that illegal; aliens could be sheltered throughout the country under this section.
• Prohibits the use of funds for border wall construction in certain areas.
• Allows the Office of Refugee Resettlement to accept private donations from politically motivated organizations for the care of unaccompanied alien children.
• Provides funds to both CBP and ICE to transport unaccompanied alien children, demonstrating that domestic transportation throughout the United States is a large part of CBP and ICE operations. This is a key enticement for parents to pay smugglers to take their children on the dangerous trek up to the southern border.
• Provides millions for a controversial case management pilot program to aid illegal aliens facing deportation – which is being overseen by a nonprofit that has previously called for the defunding and abolition of ICE.
• Provides $29 million for the Justice Department’s Legal Orientation Program, which empowers NGOs to coach large groups of detained aliens on immigration court proceedings. The effectiveness of this program is dubious as it does not provide actual legal counsel to aliens, the aliens who use this program are less likely to get an attorney and their matters take longer to resolve. Additionally, program participant organizations often blur the line between providing basic information about the process and providing legal advice.
• Provides $25 million for the USCIS Citizenship and Integration Grant Program, a program utilized by many of the same NGOs receiving federal grant money to process illegal aliens. This self-congratulatory grant program has been routinely awarded to organizations involved in active litigation against DHS and does nothing to enhance the administration of the immigration system.
• Leaves it up to the DHS Inspector General’s discretion whether to allocate funds for partnerships between state and local law enforcement to assist in enforcing immigration laws. While seemingly an independent auditor, The DHS Office of Inspector General has been mired in reports of political bias. We have already witnessed the dangerous consequences of an administration unwilling to utilize the 287(g) program as the Obama era saw a plethora of cancelled agreements. Congress is essentially relinquishing control of a critical force multiplier for immigration enforcement.
• Allows detention contracts to be rescinded based on arbitrary performance evaluations.
• Extends discretionary authority for DHS to issue more H-2B guest worker visas than the cap allows, which displaces American workers and drives down wages.
• Provides funds to eliminate processing backlogs and expedite adjudication of Afghan Special Immigrant Visa cases, as well as a cap increase of 4,000. Recent reports have exposed the lack of proper vetting for many of the Afghans in the program and the associated risks to public safety and national security. Any actions taken to expedite processing will detract from security checks and further vetting activities and increase the risks.
• All budget increases directed towards immigration enforcement are below inflation. An unprecedented border crisis calls for funds at appropriate levels – the increases are simply insufficient.

Among the damaging immigration proposals that were defeated or withdrawn during the lame duck:

• A mass amnesty proposal led by Senators Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) in exchange for an extension of weakened Title 42 and other meaningless promises of future immigration enforcement.
• The Afghan Adjustment Act, which would have granted permanent residence to largely unvetted Afghans who were allowed to enter the country under President Biden’s abuse of parole authority. Most of the Afghans who arrived in the U.S. after the administration’s disastrous withdrawal in 2021 played no role in assisting U.S. forces.
• An agriculture bill containing both an amnesty for illegal aliens and an expanded guestworker program. The last farmworker amnesty, crafted in part by current Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer when he was in the House, was the most fraud-ridden immigration program in American history.
• The Biden Administration’s attempt to slash ICE detention capacity by 30 percent.
• The Sinema-Tester amendment to the omnibus, which sought to process and release illegal aliens into our country more efficiently.
• The EAGLE Act, which would have resulted in more than 90 percent of employment-based green cards being awarded to citizens of just two countries: China and India.
• The misleadingly named Veterans Service Recognition Act, which would have provided amnesty for illegal alien relatives of veterans and even allowed deported criminals to return the U.S.
