Making Canada A State Would Be A Disaster

Donald Trump is a unique political character. He doesn’t talk in the typical mumbo jumbo. He has his own unique mumbo jumbo.

It has generally served him well because he talks directly to the American people, circumventing the media, and avoids, to some degree, the bias the media puts on his words. We get that.

However, his incessant chatter about making Canada the 51st state did not go down well during the recent Canadian election, which may have contributed to the election of a left-wing international banker. It is in the interest of the U.S. to have good relations with Canada, with whom we share a long and often unsupervised border. Besides, we share a long history with them; they have been allies, we are closely economically integrated, and we still share a similar view on liberty.

It was good to see Trudeau go. The conservative candidate Poilievre had said many good things and was gaining in the polls. In part because Trump kept insulting Canadians, we get the domination of the Liberal Party and the consummate insider, central banker, environmental extremist, World Economic Forum-loving Mark Carney.

Moreover, Trump acted as if he was trolling (to a harmful effect, it turns out), but then oddly said he wasn’t. It’s hard to know if he’s joking or being serious.

There is a pithy scene you might recall from the movie Patton. One of Patton’s aides, Colonel Charles Codman, commented on Patton’s somewhat colorful style of communication.

Codman: “General, sometimes the men don’t know when you’re joking.”

Patton: “It’s not important for them to know. It’s only important for me to know.”

We hope and pray President Trump knows the difference.

Yes, he is justified in beating up on Canada for unfair trade practices, their shirking of our shared defense burdens, their toleration of Islamic Jew hatred, and their poor control of their borders.

But making Canada a state in the American Union, even if the Canadians wanted that, is a terrible idea.

The population of California is just shy of 40 million and has 52 seats in the House of Representatives. Only nine are Republican.  They have two Senators, both liberal Democrats.

If Canada were admitted to the Union, would it be as one state or the several provinces?

Just for the sake of math, let’s assume they are admitted as one state.

That means they would get 55 seats in the House and 2 in the Senate. If admitted as provinces, Canada has 10 provinces and three territories.

Assuming that only the provinces would have Senators, that would be 20 Senators.

Given the leftist tilt of the Canadian people, that would put Republicans not only out of power, but likely out of power permanently.  Given the narrow margins Republicans now have, they could not prevail if Canada had 55 House seats and 20 Senate seats.

Canada has been nursed by both English and French socialism. They have had state-dominated and owned media forever. As a culture, they are as “woke” as California, perhaps even more so, except for the province of Alberta. Like many in Europe, they have very nice secular people protected by the U.S., so they have been free to develop a welfare state-type mentality. State-run schools, state-run healthcare, high taxes, and all the liberal cultural rubbish.

Why would we want them to join with the U.S. to give our own woke Democrats political domination?

That is just based on a political calculation. We won’t even spend the time wondering why America should start acting like an empire.  We have done enough of that to get ourselves into a great deal of trouble already. Doesn’t the acquisition of Canada seem a contradiction to “America first”? An America that minds its own business and retreats from acting like an empire?

This is where it gets confusing. Sometimes, Trump confuses his opponent as part of his psychological strategy as his “art of the deal” unfolds.

But this is a deal we don’t want. Building a Conservative majority for the long term is enough of a challenge without importing over 40 million voters, many of whom are as woke as Democrats.
