Profiles in Treachery

Editors’ Note: Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on two counts related to lying to Congress.  Some will view this as retribution, while others will see it as a pursuit of justice.  It will be interesting to see if his actions can receive an unbiased hearing by juries from either D.C. or Northern Virginia. This is the first in a series of articles on government corruption.

While there have been isolated instances of the FBI being used for political purposes, no one has done more to advance this misuse of the strategy than James Comey, the former director of the FBI. He was a registered Republican up until 2016 when he announced that he was  leaving the party because “The Republican Party has left me and many others.” Further,  “These people don’t represent anything I believe in.” (ABC News podcast, April 18, 2018)  But what kind of Republican was Comey?

His words ring true for a cabal of so-called Republicans that believe in elitism, domination through isolation and threat, globalism, and back-office deal-making. In other words…Never Trumpers. The only discernible difference between them and Democrats is their love of the military-industrial complex, perhaps best illustrated by Comey’s 2005-2010 stint with Lockheed Martin as general counsel and senior vice president. His handsome salary and multi-million-dollar compensation at departure were mainly due to (you guessed it) his lobbying efforts.

Adding to his elitist preferences, Comey made significant intellectual contributions to several prominent left-of-center and globalist “think tanks”, such as the Hertog  Foundation (connected to Columbia Law School) in 2013, one of the tax-exempt organizations that claims to be of a “conservative Republican” slant, but in reality is just another establishment promoting globalism. As a Senior Fellow at the Kettering  Foundation (2017), Comey rubbed shoulders with fellow elitists and progressives who advanced notions like “inclusive democracies”, vitally concerned with transphobia and gender justice, open borders, and the institutional racism of America. One of their chief supporters is the Rockefeller Foundation.

In the quest to reimagine democracy, James Comey lectured at the Brookings Institution (10/16/2014) as FBI Director to enlighten them regarding the dangers of not having sufficient tools to gain backdoor entry into internet platforms like Google and Apple, which used encryption to protect their customers.

No surprise that Brookings published their opinion (October 2017) that Trump’s firing of Comey “likely obstructed justice” in an apparent attempt to provide fuel for yet another impeachment or lawsuit.

His private affiliations boosted his career. He left the prestigious New York law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, which has long been associated with many governments, for a staff post at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, 1987-1993. As one of the favored, he was assigned to high-profile investigations that enhanced his professional standing, leading to his appointment as Deputy Special Counsel for the  Senate Whitewater Committee in 1996.

This assignment put Comey in a perfect position for future usefulness to the powers elite. George W. Bush elevated Comey to head the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York on January 8, 2002, where he oversaw major terrorism related cases, including the World Trade Center truck-bomb attack occurring in 1993 and the Khobar Towers incident (Saudi Arabia).

James Comey was named Deputy Attorney General, the second-highest position in the DOJ, by Bush in 2003, where he served under John Ashcroft. His image as a legal stickler was enhanced by a controversy in which he confronted Attorney General Ashcroft over the secret domestic warrantless surveillance program, dubbed Stellar Wind, which collected metadata on American citizens (Washington Post, May 15, 2007; New York Times, August 16, 2007). The story has Comey arriving at the ER as Ashcroft was recovering from gall bladder surgery before VP Dick Cheney and White House Counsel Alberto  Gonzales could get Ashcroft to sign off on the re-authorization of that NSA program.  Comey objected to unspecified legal challenges in that regard. He did not express opposition to the secret program, but wanted the proper legal basis to be established before it was renewed.

After serving in non-governmental roles, Comey was appointed Director of the FBI by President Barack Obama in September 2013. Obviously, he felt that Comey was “safe” in that role. After all, he had a lot of dirt on Obama’s own Democratic political rivals, most notably Hillary Clinton and the Clinton machine. Comey headed up the infamous Clinton email probe, wherein he determined that the case would be dropped because “no prosecutor” would pursue the matter. (More likely, because it would  embarrass the Democrat Party.)

In 2015, his focus shifted to the destruction of the Trump campaign and his appointees. Not only did he use the now much-discredited Steele Dossier as a basis for opening a full-blown investigation of Trump, but he also used the FBI to persecute other individuals like General Mike Flynn through entrapment. FBI agents entered Flynn’s office without the customary notice. They did not give him time to seek legal counsel, which constitutes an extraordinary violation of long-established policies and procedures, as well as professional ethics.

The Russian collusion hoax was not intended to be discovered. The arrogant elitists were sure that Trump would lose.  The rude awakening occurred when Trump appointed Kash Patel as Director of the FBI. He started cleaning house and, in cooperation with Attorney General Pam Bondi, initiated an investigation that led to the uncovering of reams of secret documents and emails related to the hoax.

The imposing six-foot-eight, baby-faced and knowledgeable former Director who commanded audiences at prestigious domestic and international forums and led an almost stellar career, suddenly began to suffer from brain fog, having said “I don’t know”,  “I don’t recall” or “I don’t remember” some 245 times before the House Judiciary and  Oversight committees in 2018. Even after getting the boot from the FBI, he continued to attack the Trump administration, finding time in his leisure moments to “discover”, photograph, and post seashells on the beach that spelled out 86-47. He then claimed not to fully understand the meaning of same, all after serving in posts that made him intimately familiar with such terminology.

Under Comey’s leadership, the FBI investigated those who attended school board meetings, jailed people who prayed in front of abortion mills, injected assets into the January 6 Capitol protests to encourage violence, spied on fundamentalist Catholics, forcefully pressured social media to silence opposition, and a host of other nefarious actions. He, along with such luminaries as Peter Strzok, has all but destroyed the reputation of the once-honored institution. But now, he can’t remember squat.  If there is anyone who deserves indictment, it is James Comey. It would be a national disgrace not to do so. He has given treachery a whole new dimension.
