Trump Reportedly Told Venezuelan President He Would Grant Him And His Family Safe Passage If He Resigned Immediately

The White House reportedly delivered a blunt ultimatum to Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro during a phone call last week.
The message was direct, sources familiar with the exchange told the Miami Herald. Resign now and receive safe passage for yourself and your family, or face escalating military action.
The call quickly stalled over three issues. Maduro requested global amnesty for crimes committed by his regime, which Washington rejected.
The Venezuelan leader also proposed retaining control of the armed forces while allowing free elections, a model one source compared to Nicaragua’s 1991 arrangement under Violeta Chamorro. The administration rejected that offer as well. The final impasse came over timing, with Washington demanding immediate resignation and Caracas refusing.

The U.S. reportedly offered guaranteed safe passage only for Maduro, his wife Cilia Flores, and his son, according to the Miami Herald.
The call reportedly also included discussion of a potential in-person meeting between Trump and Maduro in the United States, though no plans currently exist, according to The New York Times. Maduro had previously offered Washington a significant stake in Venezuelan oil fields to defuse tensions, but U.S. officials cut off those discussions early last month.
Brazil, Qatar and Turkey initially brokered the call. After Trump declared Venezuelan airspace “closed in its entirety” on Saturday, Maduro’s government attempted to reach Washington again but received no response.
The administration designated Maduro and his top officials as leaders of the Cartel de los Soles, a Foreign Terrorist Organization, earlier this week. The U.S. has placed a $50 million bounty on Maduro, the largest ever offered for a sitting head of state.
