“‘The Last of Kin’ who died so that Israel could live. Remembering the 144 Holocaust Survivors who joined the fledgling Israel Defense Forces and were killed while defending the new State.” — Walter Bingham
Netzer Acharon is “Last Remnant.” Namely, Holocaust Survivors who remained as the last Survivor of their nuclear family. So they were those who experienced firsthand the Holocaust terror. During or after World War II, enlisted in the Israeli armed corps and fell in Israeli Wars.

Across Israel, ceremonies are held marking Yom Hazikaron, Israeli Memorial Day, for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of Israel during the country’s defensive wars and for our brothers and sisters who were murdered by Arab terrorists.
I attend a very special event that centers on “The Last of Kin”, 144 Holocaust survivors who lost their entire families in Europe, immigrated to British Mandate Palestine before the war of independence, joined the fledgling Israel Defense Forces, and were killed defending the new state.
Aviv Vishkovski guides tours through Mount Herzl, Israel’s national cemetery. Buried there is Theodor Herzl, dreamer of the Zionist dream, and thousands of IDF soldiers who fell in battle while bringing his dream to life, defending the State of Israel.
