From Jim Crow to Joe Crow

Readers are doubtless aware that Jim Crow was a system of state-sanctioned discrimination against black people for the basic reason of their skin color. Housing was segregated as was public accommodations and education.

It was almost universally the product of the Democrat Party. Northern Liberals united with Southern bigots to ensure the rule of the Democrat Party.

Well, as time often seems to run backward, the Democrat Party is at it again. This time it is Joe Crow, a system of discrimination and demonization of white people, especially white men. It should now be called Joe Crow in honor of Joe Biden, the first President since perhaps fellow Democrat Woodrow Wilson to explicitly favor one race over another on the basis of skin color for the purposes of political power.

Browbeaten by Democrats and media allies and perhaps beholden to Federal dollars, numerous corporations and universities have said publicly and explicitly that they will hire people based on their sex and skin color. United Airlines is a case in point and so is Ohio State University. It will be interesting to see how this new shade of racial discrimination holds up in court as it seems to be in clear violation of Title VII the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer –

(1) to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; or

(2) to limit, segregate, or classify his employees or applicants for employment in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect his status as an employee, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

It was not that long ago that the nation struggled mightily to get practice to conform to the theory, that is, to unfurl the promise of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution to see that all people were treated equally by the government. That is what Martin Luther King was all about.

When public actions fell short of ideals, it was not the fault of those ideals, but rather the fault of those living at that time. Today, the racialists want to do away with the ideals and form a new racial spoils system where the goal is not to treat all equally under the law.

Laws cannot change the hearts of men or private individuals in their decision with who they associate or if they prefer one race over another. While perhaps not optimal, this does not involve the use of state force. But it was established by federal statute long ago that discrimination should not be permitted in the case of government, employment or educational opportunity.

Not that long ago, a general consensus was formed of equal treatment under the law and integration of the races.

That consensus likely still holds among the majority of Americans but a minority of Marxist-oriented race-baiters have taken over higher education and now appears to be running the White House. The White House staff seems to have convinced or more likely trained President Joe Biden, their public spokesman, in the wisdom of discrimination and racial hatred. He spews their hateful theories with a flat demeanor from the bully teleprompter as if possessed by a Marxist body snatcher.

With multiculturalism, critical race theory, the 1619 Project and the fringe ideas of the American campus, these leftist constructs are now the official position of the Democrat Party and its leaders.

Thirty years ago, observant Liberals, saw the poison in these movements. Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. writing in his 1998 volume The Disuniting of America put forth:

“…multiculturalism also assumes a militant form in which it opposes the ideas of a common culture, rejects the goals of assimilation and integration, and celebrates the immutability of diverse and separate ethnic and racial communities.  Extreme separatists, while often flourishing the multicultural flag, in fact, rush beyond true multiculturalism into ethnocentrism, the belief in the superior virtue of their own ethnic group.

Biden has gone so far as to conflate the January 6th election protests that resulted in the storming of the Capitol Building, with the 40-year war against Islamic terror or jihadism. Never mind the protests had nothing to do about race or supremacy. They were about election irregularities.

In his recent address to Congress, Biden said “white supremacy” is a greater danger than jihadism. We wonder how the families who lost loved ones in the two bombings of the World Trade Center or those families that lost loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan must think about that.

Of even greater concern, if those who oppose today’s racialism are enemies of the state, does that mean the intelligence and law enforcement agencies will be turned against political opponents of Joe Crow?

What is perhaps most shocking though is the descent into pure race-based thinking.  Everything is racist it would seem and the only solution is to discriminate against white people or eliminate them as if all white people are some kind of evil homogenous blob whose population today is guilty of all historical sins of past generations.

Writing in The Imaginative Conservative, Joseph Pearce opines:

Even in the wildest reaches of the imagination, I could not have foreseen that the Marxist would come to endorse the white supremacist view of history. It seemed inconceivable that Marx could be seduced by Hitler. And yet “critical race theory” is as obsessed with race as were the Nazis. According to the new generation of Marxists, the political struggle is not about class war but race war; it’s not about a struggle between the classes but a struggle between the races. Like the Nazis, the critical race theorists don’t believe that racism is a prejudice in individuals but is something determined by history. It is not something evil in the heart of men but something systemic in history itself. Since this is so, the solution is not teaching and preaching the love of neighbour but the destruction of the “system.” And since the “system” is history itself, the final solution is the cancelling of the past, the utter erasing of the collective cultural memory of the people.

In this race war on culture there must be no mercy. The critical race theorist demonizes “dead white men” as surely as the Nazis demonized Jews. They are the race enemy, the untermenschen, who must be eradicated at all costs. Thus, we see demands that classical music must be cancelled because it is mostly the work of dead white men. The Nazis burned books whose authors were Jewish; the neo-Nazi race theorists seek to ban anything and everything whose authors were dead white males. It’s all about skin colour. Just as the Nazis insisted that there’s no such thing as a good Jew, today’s race theorists insist that there’s no such thing as a good “dead white male.” As for living white males, they are tainted by the original sins of their ancestors. They are to blame by association. They are guilty of crimes committed centuries before they were born. They carry the mark of Cain, the stain of their DNA, which makes them the scapegoats for everything that makes the race theorists angry. They must be cancelled. Exterminated. Crucified.

The racialism of the Democrats must be rejected. From the school board to the statehouse to the U.S. Congress, Republicans must unite as they did once before in eradicating slavery to defeat the left’s present-day malignant theory of people and history.

It takes little courage to acknowledge the sins of the past. It will take considerable courage to acknowledge the sins of the present.
