Biden-Harris Election Win a Victory for Our Nation and Working-class Americans

Washington, D.C. (November 7, 2020) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) – made the following statement today:

President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris have our congratulations on their historic win. LIUNA members were proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with Joe – advocating for, voting, and turning out friends and family like never before for a team that is committed to the trade union movement and protecting our livelihoods.
The American people have spoken, and it is now time for winners and losers alike to respect and honor their will. Baseless, frivolous, and unfounded attempts to throw out or stop counting votes are an affront to law and order, and a direct assault on the very foundations of our great republic. Regardless of whether the losers of this election follow tradition and concede gracefully, we demand that they engage in a good-faith transition and that they step aside when the time comes. Through war and peace, boom and bust, good times and bad, our orderly transfer of power has been and must remain, a shining example of the rule of law.

When Joe Biden and Kamala Harris take office next January, we will have two of our own in the highest offices in the land. Joe and Kamala truly understand the trials and tribulations of working men and women; they never forget where they came from, and they value hard work and the people who do it. I am confident that over the next four years, they will build back better, restore our standing in the world, and help all Americans prosper and succeed.

In the coming months, LIUNA will be honored to work with the Biden Administration and pro-worker candidates at every level of government to help move our nation forward, build our infrastructure, and restore our economy.

NORTH AMERICA’S BUILDING TRADES UNIONS STATEMENT ON KXL PIPELINE CANCELLATION ANNOUNCEMENT

Washington, D.C. – January 21, 2021 – Today, North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) released the following statement from President Sean McGarvey in response to the KXL cancellation announced yesterday by the Biden Administration:

“Our congratulations to President Biden and Vice President Harris on their inauguration. The weight of the country is on your shoulders – godspeed.

“North America’s Building Trades Unions are deeply disappointed in the decision to cancel the Keystone XL permit on the President’s first official day in office. Environmental ideologues have now prevailed, and over a thousand union men and women have been terminated from employment on the project.

“On a historic day that is filled with hope and optimism for so many Americans and people around the world, tens of thousands of workers are left to wonder what the future holds for them. In the midst of a pandemic that has claimed 400 thousand American lives and has wreaked havoc on the economic security and standard of living of tens of millions more, we must all stand in their shoes and acknowledge the uncertainty and anxiety this government action has caused.

“NABTU’s position remains unchanged. Our unions support an all of the above energy strategy that supports and grows the middle class and those desperately trying to reach it. Addressing climate change is a priority for all of us, but a truly sustainable future cannot continue to dismiss the economic sustainability of working families. We welcome this Administration and the architects of the opposition for this and hundreds of other projects to engage with us on a rational national strategy going forward that does not treat workers, their families, and entire communities as an afterthought, but makes them equal to economic and climate imperatives.
